Inspiring Scotland's Link Up programme

Why we need your help

Link Up is at the core of Inspiring Scotland's ambitions for a Scotland without poverty or disadvantage. It’s a community wellbeing and development programme that supports local people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and organise activities and events for and by the local community. Through Link Up, people living in some of Scotland’s most deprived communities are reinventing themselves as active players in their own lives and working together to end generations of poverty and disadvantage.

Since its creation in 2012, Link Up has reached over 21,000 people, with almost 1,300 helping to run fun activities such as gardening, cooking, crafts, sports and music; fruit and veg co-ops, bike clubs, community cafes and shops, and community cinemas. Link Up is for everyone and is whatever local people want it to be!

But these are not just activities; they help people to build relationships, create social connections, develop confidence and self-esteem, and give a sense of purpose and belonging – the necessary foundations for positive change. Its longevity and scale owe much to the fact that Link Up stems from our belief that the ingredients for lasting change already lie in our communities, in the shape of local people’s energy, strengths, and passion. When people are connected and energised, radical change can and does happen.

Link Up workers are embedded in the community and are given the time and flexibility to get to know local people, uncover and harness human potential, and give support to do the things that matter to them. They are given the freedom to operate in a way that is engaging, nurturing, natural and ultimately human. They are supported and trained in identifying and helping people to cope with conflict, bereavement, trauma and illness. All this builds trust and respect and creates an empowering environment that enables people to change their lives and others’.

Today, Link Up operates in nine communities across Scotland: Craigmillar, Leith and Muirhouse in Edinburgh, Gorbals and Possilpark in Glasgow, Gallatown in East Kirkcaldy, Saltcoats in North Ayrshire and Whitfiled in Dundee.
