London to Cape Town Challenge 2021

Why we need your help

The Challenge:

Starting 1st April 2021, Atlas Foundation supporters are going to attempt to virtually run, cycle, swim and walk the distance from London to Cape Town, in order to raise funds to build an Atlas DigiBus for our children in the townships of KwaZulu-Natal.

The cause:

In KwaZulu-Natal, many of our children live in extreme poverty, with little access to food, clean sanitation or any decent education. Most of our children don't have access to wifi and have never seen a computer before. They learn out of old, worn out textbooks, read off of black-boards and sit on the floor throughout lessons.

In lockdown this situation has been worsened. With no access to laptops and phones, online classes are impossible. Most families can't afford books and generations of illiteracy means it's impossible for parents to help keep their children engaged with school from home.

More than ever before, children as young as 11-years-old are having no option but to join a gang, and are falling helplessly into crime, drugs and alcohol. Without immediate intervention many of thesechildren will never return to school again.

If children do not return to school soon, the damage to their education will be irreparable

The project:

Atlas’s DigiBus project takes old buses, and transforms them into mobile, digital classrooms, that work to improve education opportunities for children in the developing world.

Fitted with everything from laptops, screens and Wi-Fi, to anti-viral misting systems and CCTV cameras, the DigiBus makes a safe and inspiring place for our children to learn skills that are advantageous in today's economy.

The difference:

In supporting us deliver a DigiBus to these children in South Africa, you could give as many as 10,000 children, in 11 schools, across 2 townships the opportunity to get hands-on experience with computers and digital learning every week.

In 2020, Atlas delivered a DigiBus to children in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. After witnessing the remarkable benefits this first DigiBus has made to the lives of thousands of children in Nairobi, we would like to deliver a similar level of opportunity to our children in KwaZulu-Natal.

Every child deserves an equal opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
