Khadija Ismayilova, Eskinder Nega, Anh Ba Sam: three courageous journalists and bloggers imprisoned for doing their job. Their crime: reporting on issues of public interest.

The Media Legal Defence Initiative represents them and many others who are targeted for their journalism and have been imprisoned, beaten up or sued into silence. We work with—and often pay for—their lawyers and if we can't get justice for them in their own countries, we take their cases to international courts or tribunals.

Our work is very effective. Over the past 12 months, we defended 598 journalists and we were successful in 79% of their cases. With the right amount of time and money, we are able to obtain justice for most of the journalists we work for.

We have important successes in international courts and tribunals as well: over the last 12 months, we won a landmark victory at the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights leading the way for press freedom across the region; the first ever media freedom case before the East African Court of Justice; and a groundbreaking judgment at the European Court of Human Rights on the use of hidden cameras in investigative journalism. These judgments have raised the bar for the protection of journalists.

The photographs below show two of the journalists we are currently representing (Khadija Ismayilova and Anh Ba Sam) as well as a few of the journalists we have helped get released over the past year: Ethiopia's Zone9 bloggers, Egyptian journalists Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, and Lohé Issa Konaté, a journalist from Burkina Faso whose case we took to the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights which held that no journalist should ever be imprisoned for defamation.

Please help us help more journalists like them and donate to our Christmas 2015 campaign. Every penny and cent you donate is used for the defence of journalists.

On behalf of the journalists we work for: thank you!
