Thank you for visiting the Mount Elgon Trek team’s fundraising page. We hugely appreciate your support.

The Challenge

On 26 January 2018 13 intrepid trekkers from the UK’s food and hospitality industry together with two of the Farm Africa team, will take on Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya, in support of Farm Africa. This is a once in a lifetime challenge which will see the team climbing four peaks over 4,000m and trekking up to 27km a day in some extremely challenging conditions.

This challenge is truly one-of-a-kind and full of firsts – the team will be taking a route never climbed before; unlike all before them, they will be pitching camp on Elgon’s crater, which is at an altitude of over 3,600m; and they have been given special permission by the Kenyan government to cross the border via the mountain top. Physically and mentally this will push them to the limit, and it is your support and the knowledge of what a difference it will make to the work of Farm Africa which will keep them motivated to keep putting one foot after the other.

Why?

Today, almost half of the world’s extreme poor live in sub-Saharan Africa. The vast majority work in agriculture in rural areas where 80% of farmland is managed by smallholder farmers. In order for sub-Saharan Africa to reach its full potential, tackling poverty head on and creating a prosperous rural Africa is vital.

This is where Farm Africa steps in - Farm Africa helps farmers grow more, sell more and sell for more. Farm Africa pioneers techniques that boost harvests, build rural incomes, sustain natural resources and help end Africa’s need for aid. Working with communities, the private sector and governments, Farm Africa finds the most effective ways to increase food production.

UK Aid Match

Between 14 October 2017 and 14 January 2018 donations in support of the Mount Elgon Challenge will go to Farm Africa’s Growing Futures appeal that will help young farmers living in western Kenya develop sustainable horticulture businesses. All donations from UK individuals will be doubled by the UK Government – meaning gifts will go twice as far.

Food for Good

This challenge is part of the wider Food for Good campaign which unites the food and hospitality industry behind Farm Africa's vision of a prosperous rural Africa. Together, the industry has pledged to raise £5 million to help 70,000 people move out of poverty.

Thank you for your support,
