Nepal Disaster Relief Gala Dinner
Why we need your help
Nepal Disaster Appeal ... your chance to make a difference
Nepal will take years, if not decades to recover from the recent earthquake disaster. Prior to the quake it was already classed within the bottom 10% of the world league of economic wealth, with 35% of the population living below the poverty line. 70% of the population who live in the country are also spread over 1000's of remote valleys.
The country's already fragile road infrastructure was severeley disrupted by the quake, preventing access to many remove villages, and whole villages were either destroyed or lost many of their houses. This year's monsoon season is now upon us with the danger that the torrential rain and winds will worsen much more the underlying situation.
The link between Harrogate Brigantes Rotary Club and Nepal is strong, via a long running partnership with the Rotary Club of the Himalayan Gurkhas. This partnership is headed up by former Gurkha, Major Lil Gurung (MBE) and has resulted in the establishment of a successful IT, literacy and economic regeneration project in the upland Panchamul Valley where Lil was born.
Major Lil has led the relief efforts for his Club and prior to the monsoon coordinated relief work to the many remote villages his members have direct contact with. His first hand reports of the damage in Nepal indicate that, despite aid efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake in April, there is still much work to be done. Broken infrastructure needs to be repaired (water, electricity, roads), as do hundreds of hospitals and thousands of homes.
The Crown Hotel in Harrogate will be hosting a Charity Gala Dinner on Saturday 19 September 2015, in association with Harrogate Brigantes Rotary Club. All proceeds from this evening will be passed to Harrogate Brigantes Rotary Club in aid of the Nepal Earthquake Disaster.
We have set up this page for those of you who are unable to attend on the night, but would still like to contribute to the Appeal.
