Pennine Journey for Wishlist
Why we need your help
On Saturday September 29 Oaklea Wishlist are doing a fundraiser with a difference - we are joining hundreds of walkers across the North to mark the 80th anniversary of the creation of Alfred Wainwright's "Pennine Journey" (PJ).
Cumbria based Author and long distance walking enthusiast David Pitt - seen playing peek-a-boo behind a venerable pile of Wainwright's- helped re engage interest in the PJ a few years ago and has helped put the PJ 'back on the map' (it's now fully waymarked by Ordnance Survey).
In September 1938, Alfred Wainwright - now well known for his Lakeland walking books, set off on a journey as storm clouds gathered across Europe. He made a solitary walk through the Pennines -we and others intend to recreate that walk on its 80th birthday.
Oaklea with fantastic support from a group of intrepid walkers are doing sections on the western side of the PJ - covering the sections from Milburn-Appleby-Kirkby Stephen to raise money for Wishlist (our fund that assists young people under 21).
As you can see the PJ is fully signed - largely down to David's efforts and the "Pennine Journey Supporters Club" approaching the OS.
You are advised to take an OS Map - and look out for the PJ signs! Our crack force of walkers will sadly not be on hand to guide you - but you could say hello if you come across them straddling stiles and kissing....gates!
