Surviving Winter Campaign

Why we need your help

HIWCF has launched the Surviving Winter 2021-2022 campaign to help tackle fuel poverty for older and vulnerable people struggling to keep warm at winter time.

The Foundation is asking those in receipt of the annual Government Winter Fuel Payment to donate their payment if they are able to do so, to help those less fortunate across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Families, individuals and businesses wishing to lend their support to the campaign can also make a donation to help local people in need.

At this time of year, as we begin to boost up our heating thermostats, older residents in our communities need extra support. For people living within limited financial means, they simply may not be able to afford to top up their electricity meter or they may be anxious about the gas bill arriving in the post.

Choosing to keep warm may mean using finances needed for other essentials such as food. Surviving Winter grants, distributed through our key partners in the region, support vulnerable people to stay warm, eat well and remain mobile during the coldest months, including practical assistance to travel to medical appointments or support with grocery shopping.

Latest government figures show that 28,300 people died across England and Wales during last winter, and National Energy Action reports that about 30% of excess winter deaths were likely to be attributable to the impact of cold homes on people with respiratory and cardiovascular disease. The Covid-19 virus also poses a real challenge for people living in fuel poverty and it is more important than ever that we help those who are struggling financially to keep their homes warm during winter time.

Sally

It's a very poor show for our society (the 5th wealthiest in the world?) that we have fuel poverty and that people are having to be cold at home.
