"Witness the Fitness 2019"
The choristers from Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum of Dean Close Preparatory School are busy raising money for their forthcoming tour to Sweden in July 2019. Various fundraising initiatives are already underway including Bag2School and Coppers4Choristers and on Sunday 16th June, the choristers will be walking 12 miles from the front of school in Cheltenham to Tewkesbury Abbey. They did this for the first time in 2017 and it was a great experience, challenging but good fun and it helped them reach their fundraising target.
The Schola Cantorum tours are independently funded, not funded by school and they rely on the efforts of choristers and the generosity of sponsors. This year the choristers would like to raise enough money to leave a legacy for future tours and they are also going to make a donation from the money raised to the school's chosen charity this year, “Family Space”.
The choristers range in age from 8 - 13 years old. They rehearse at Dean Close before school every morning and sing Evensong at Tewkesbury Abbey up to four days a week, as well as giving concerts, making CD recordings and singing at other events by invitation. Life as a chorister is very hectic. Not only do the boys keep up their commitments as a chorister, they also play musical instruments and many are keen sportsmen, not forgetting their academic studies.
This summer’s tour to Sweden will involve Schola Cantorum singing concerts and a mass in the beautiful cathedrals of Uppsala and Vasteras.
The choristers would be very grateful for any donations big or small to spur them on their way and help them reach their target. Thank you so much!
