Building Schools Saving Lives

Building Schools Saving Lives

Why we need your help

NEPAL RECONSTRUCTION APPEAL

On Saturday 25th April 2015 Nepal was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, the biggest the country has seen in 80 years.

Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do. Buildings across a 100 mile radius collapsed in a matter of minutes and so far the number of fatalities has risen to over 8,000. It is expected to reach 10,000Emergency relief operations are already underway, but these will only provide temporary solutions to Nepal's problems.

Nepal needs immediate technical assistance to help re-build vital infrastructure and prevent further fall-out from developing in the wake of the disaster. 9 out of 10 schools have been damaged or destroyed in the worst affected districts, putting 24,000 classrooms out of action. This means that nearly a million children will not be able to return to school in the wake of the earthquake. It is imperative that the children of Kathmandu return to school as soon as possible, giving them the respite of normality from the horrors they have faced and allowing their parents time to rebuild their lives.

Article 25 urgently needs your help to begin operations in Nepal and ensure that the country builds back better to prevent future disasters. We have a decade of experience constructing earthquake-resistant schools in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Chile and Haiti. We can design schools that will withstand the next earthquake and prevent another disaster. Without urgent technical support and more robust building methods, Nepal will experience similar tragedies again in the future. Help us give the children of Kathmandu the education they deserve.

This is money raised from two cake sales at Purcell in Norwich. We are an architectural practice and wanted to raise money for the effort in Nepal following the earthquakes and thought yours was the most appropriate!
