AFOT Halfway House Sanctuary Appeal
Why we need your help
Please help us take the bold and brave step towards the creation of a new Animal Friends of Turkey sanctuary for dogs in need
If we can see this through it will mean we can almost double the number of dogs we take into our programme at any one time from the current limit of 30 to a new capacity of 58.
We can do this … but only with your help. We desperately need an initial £3,000 to get the sanctuary open and going.
We have just signed up on a five-year lease for a one-acre plot of land close to Seydikemer that we aim to build into a safe haven for up to 28 AFOT fur babies.
The new haven will be called the Animal Friends of Turkey Halfway House – a sanctuary for the abused and abandoned
The land comes complete with its own house to allow us to have AFOT volunteers living on site permanently to care for our dogs.
We have been able to take this step now thanks to AFOT supporter and benefactor Sam Hutchinson who has kindly and generously paid for the first six months of rent. We cannot thank her enough.
We will be applying for grant aid to cover the majority of the costs needed to build the rest of the dog sleeping accommodation on site.
This will take time to secure and so we are today launching an appeal to help us carry out the necessary initial work to make the site secure and to get us going.
The £3,000 we hope to raise will cover the cost of:
- securely fencing off the one-acre site to make it dog proof
- building sleeping accommodation for the first five dogs
- and to carry out some basic repairs on the house to enable our volunteers to move in
The demand for our help has grown steadily over the past two-and-a-half years as our name and reputation has spread further and further afield across Turkey.
We find it hard as a committee to turn dogs in need away and the capacity of our foster care network has been holding us back.
The creation of the Halfway House – halfway between the street and a forever home in the UK – will immediately mean we will be able to help twice as many unfortunate fur babies, and it will also give us a place of sanctuary for us to use in cases of emergency.
We will still ensure that all our fur babies will get a period of living inside the home with our sanctuary volunteers before making the journey to the UK.
This is an exciting chapter for Animal Friends of Turkey and the AFOT team.
Our growth is being fuelled by the huge and growing need for rescue work in Turkey and by a vacuum in official state help for street dogs.
We want to do all we can to do for these dogs. We can – with your help.
Please help us to get the AFOT Halfway House sanctuary open for the sake of the dogs. As ever we thank you for your help and support for without it we could not do what we do
