Why we need your help
WOW! Thank you SO much! By reaching our first target of £1200 we can now pay for three months' worth of the Charlie's new medicine. However, there is still a long way for Charlie to go. He's going to need regular visits from the vet, x-rays, special shoes, and a special diet, in addition to any further medication he needs.Charlie has started a blog to keep everyone up-to-date with how his treatment is going.
A message from Charlie:
Hi, my name is Charlie. Thank you so much for looking at this campaign page.
I am a very handsome 24-year old skewbald gelding. I belong to Wenlo Riding for the Disabled Association, a registered charity. I live at Meadow School of Riding in Normanton-on-Soar where I also work with two other RDA Groups - Ashmount and Ruddington - as well as being part of the East Midlands Special Olympics team.
My main aim in life is to help teach people with special needs and disabilities to ride. It may be just a gentle walk across the fields, or trotting or even cantering around the arena in a dressage competition. I just love being able to help my friends.
Now, though, I need your help. I have become quite unwell - almost overnight! The vet says I have a condition called EMS and laminitis. I'll let the Wenlo people tell you more about that below. What I do know is I have very sore feet! I need to stay in my stable at the moment and I also need some medicine which the humans say is quite expensive.
If you can help Wenlo to pay for the medicine I need, I would be extremely grateful!
Love and neighs,
A message from Wenlo RDA:
Charlie is a very special horse.
Charlie belongs to Wenlo RDA and is a familiar face to everyone who rides with Wenlo, Ashmount and Ruddington RDA groups and Meadow School of Riding, and the East Midlands Special Olympics team. He was the very first horse to enter the arena when British Dressage included an ID class for the first time in their Para Championships in 2018 - and came home with the first prize in his class!
Now, though, Charlie needs your help.
He's recently developed a condition called Equine Metabolic Syndrome, or EMS. This is a hormonal disorder, which causes insulin resistance - it is very similar to Type II Diabetes in humans. As a result of the EMS, he has developed laminitis in all four of his feet. Laminitis is a very painful condition that is caused by inflammation in the horse’s foot, and needs very careful management to make sure it does not get worse over time.
Charlie is such a special horse and we want to do our best to help him recover from the laminitis and manage the EMS. He's been on medication for a couple of weeks now - although he's going to be on "box-rest" for some time.
There is an alternative medicine the vet says we could try, which should be even more effective. Of course we'd like to try that - but it is very expensive.
Wenlo RDA has always kept some money saved up in case Charlie ever needed veterinary care - but this fund will soon be used up. He's also going to need a special diet.
Hopefully, after a few months of treatment and box rest we'll be able to start getting Charlie fit again and keep the EMS under control by diet and exercise, but that is still a long way off.
Can you help us to fund the medicine and special care Charlie will need to carry on leading a happy, active life?
Thank you for looking at our appeal.
