Children's Church Walk for WaterHarvest
Why we need your help
The Children's Church at St Michael's are raising money to support WaterHarvest, which is one of our three chosen charities for this year. Their target is to finance the building of a 'taanka' which will provide a family living in the Thar desert area of Rajasthan with a sustainable supply of clean drinking water.*
A 'taanka' is a device for harvesting the monsoon rains and storing the water safely underground during the rest of the year when there is little or no rain. As well as providing essential clean water, the taanka will free up the women and girls of the family who often spend many hours a day carrying water over long distances (from open water sources which are often dirty and badly polluted). Above all, it will enable the girls to get back to attending school.
The children have two fundraising events coming up and would love you to support them. These are:
1. A Sponsored Water Carry on 9th June (part of the St Michael's Green Days)
2. A Cake Bake Sale on Sunday 7th July (after Mass)
If you would like to know more about the wonderful work done by WaterHarvest, visit their stand at Green Days or, for a real on-the-ground insight into their work, have a look at the fascinating video on this page.
*For each 'taanka', 70% of the costs (£500) are provided by WaterHarvest and the community or family is expected to cover the remaining 30%, often by providing labour or stone.
St Michael and All Angels Childen's Church and WaterHarvest would like to thank Horton and Garton estate agents for their wonderful support in this appeal.
