Welcome to the 2018 Coeur Blanc fundraising page. The event takes place on March 17th in Meribel. Completing the Coeur Blanc is truly a marathon on skis (around 95km in one day / or the equivalent of almost 2 Everest’s in vertical drop!) and is not for the faint hearted, it requires determination and dedication. However the time and effort each skier gives to the event is 100% worth it: In 2018 we are supporting a project to provide faster and more accurate diagnosis of people with suspected heart attacks. The ultimate aim is to roll this out to hospitals around the world.

At St Thomas’ Hospital Professor Mike Marber and Dr Tom Kaier have pioneered a new test that has the potential to revolutionise the way heart attacks are diagnosed, and therefore the treatment of people entering A&E with chest complaints.

Their research has identified a protein, called MyC, which appears in the blood with a heart attack. MyC has been identified as 50 times more sensitive than the proteins traditionally used to diagnose a heart attack. This makes it possible to run an instantaneous blood test (in 15-20 minutes) for patients experiencing a suspected heart attack using a small, portable, hand-held device, rather than waiting for the results of lengthy lab tests which are run alongside an ECG (usually overnight). This faster and more accurate diagnosis could be a real game-changer.

Annually, A&E admissions in the UK see over 2.2 million people for chest pains. Over 200,000 are diagnosed with having a heart attack, and without a timely diagnosis a heart attack can unfortunately be fatal, especially for those high-risk patients who require immediate attention. As importantly, the great majority would hopefully be tested very quickly with this device and be sent home with the reassurance that they have not had a heart attack, without having to spend a night in hospital and using up vital A&E beds, resources and doctors' time.

The implications of this new diagnostic tool are thus extraordinary: almost instantaneous heart attack diagnosis in A&E at a point and in a place where time is critical, the provision of devices to GP surgeries and even to high-risk patients for home use.

The funds raised at the 2018 Coeur Blanc ski challenge will enable them to create a functioning prototype and purchase 6-8 devices for field testing.

As always, teams will need to complete a full journey on all 52 lifts within the valley during the course of a single day. Each team consists of between 4 and 6 skiers / snowboarders and can include one professional guide. The teams choose their own routes, but which ever order they select it will require skiing a descent of over 15,000 metres.

On behalf of the Coeur Blanc Team, and everyone at Guys and St Thomas’ Charity, thank you so much for your support.
