Monmouth RFC Copley Charitable Trust

The Monmouth RFC Copley Charitable Trust has been established in memory of Monmouth RFC warrior and gentleman, William Copley.

The purpose of the MRFC Copley Trust is to help children and young people through the medium of rugby and to raise funds for other charitable causes.

A Memorial Vets match is being held in Monmouth on Saturday the 11th February 2017 - kick off 11.30am at Monmouth Sports Ground – in Will’s memory and to raise funds for the MRFC Copley Trust and one of Will’s favourite charities, the Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice in Cardiff.

Please come along to the match if possible – it promises to be a great day of rugby with many of Will’s old pals putting on their boots for an outing before Wales play England at the Principality Stadium. We look forward to seeing you at the match and afterwards at the Monmouth RFC clubhouse for a beer – or two!

In the event that you would like to make a donation please do so – all donations are very much appreciated.

William Copley - Warrior and Gentleman

Will was a wonderful husband to his wife Alex and an exceptional father to his two sons Griff and Osian. Will was a great Ambassador of life. He loved to play and have fun. A consummate professional, he cared for everyone.

William Copley passed away on the 31st January 2016 after a very short fight with cancer. Will played his last game of rugby aged 47 for Monmouth RFC on the 5th December 2015. Will was a great Clubman, having played rugby for Monmouth 1st XV for over ten years. Will coached young rugby teams for both of his boys and assisted other age groups when they needed support over the best part of a decade. All Monmouth RFC number 5 shirts carry the name Copley in his memory.

William Copley – Rugby History

Will’s rugby career began at Christ College Brecon where he won his 1stXV colours and Crawshays honours playing at lock, which became his preferredposition. Will perfected his place kicking at goal whist at Christ College, which was a skill seldom used during the rest of his 37 year rugby career.

Will was renowned for his commitment and hard work around the field. He thoroughly enjoyed a good ruck and maul. He was an excellent line out forward, both in the air and on the ground. A titan of a man, his scrummaging was exemplary, and complimented his hard work around the field. He will be remembered for his “slow walk” ball carrying and “swatting” strong arm handoffs.

Will went on to play for the Kingston Rams, the Old Victorians, Lensbury RFC, King’s College University, the Aesculapians and Monmouth RFC. He also had a number of seasons playing with Colin Charvis at London Welsh, which he would never let anyone forget!

For over a decade the Number 5 shirt at Monmouth RFC belonged to William Copley. Even at 47 years of age, it took at severe bout of cancer to retire him from the shirt and his game. The Monmouth RFC Number 5 playing shirts carry the name Copley in his memory.

Rest in peace old friend.
