Why we need your help

Saving Wildlife Together

It was such a pleasure to welcome visitors back to Wild Place Project. This is a great first step on our recovery journey, which may take many years.

I want to reassure you the safety of our visitors remains a priority. We have been working behind the scenes at Wild Place Project for many weeks to put in place new hand-washing and cleaning regimes, a one-way route, new timed ticketing systems and create new ways of working for our staff. This has been an enormous undertaking for the team and changes like this take time to implement. Wild Place is Covid-Secure and provides a safe and welcoming day out for our visitors and Members.

We are now working hard to implement the same systems for Bristol Zoo Gardens and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times.

I start by saying our recovery will take many years, working within a rapidly changing funding economy. Opened in 1836 Bristol Zoo Gardens is the oldest provincial zoo in the world. We lead or participate in 93 international conservation breeding programmes in order to secure the future of these species.

Our work with more than 400 species in captivity also informs species conservation in 14 projects across 4 continents. We are leading publishers of peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals. BZS staff work with global conservation bodies including the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Last year alone we engaged with 46,300 schoolchildren through visits to our zoos and teach 340 students on 7 under/post-graduate degree courses with 4 Universities. We reach out to more than 4,100 people through community programmes, which include 50 community groups.

We work closely with children and young people with mental health issues and provide bursary schemes to widen audience participation. This impact cannot be lost.

The support we have received to date has been overwhelming and the demand for Wild Place tickets was phenomenal. This really demonstrates how we are viewed as a vital part of the community and the special place the Society has in people’s hearts. This is why I am repeating the message that we cannot fully recover from the devasting impact the pandemic has inflicted upon us without your continuing support.

I hope to see you soon.

Take care and stay well.

From 1950s, a visit to Bristol would not be complete without a visit to the Zoo. The striking frieze over the entrance is etched on my memory and an introduction to all the interesting animals and beautiful gardens beyond.
