Southlands Virtual Cycle-a-thon

Why we need your help

Southlands Residential Care Home in Highweek, Newton Abbot, are organising a Virtual Cycle-a-thon which will start at 11am on Monday 22nd June and end at 3pm on Wednesday 15th July.  So much fun has gone out of life since the start of the lockdown with the only really engaging news being the antics of Colonel Tom as he raised millions for the NHS just by being on a mission.

The residents at Southlands have come up with the most brilliant way of having the most tremendous fun whilst helping KingsCare and giving themselves the best excuse to indulge in a great variety of treats as they make their virtual way between Newton Abbot and Lands End – a cream tea (the Devon way) in Torquay, fish and chips in Brixham, gin in Plymouth, a cream tea (the Cornish way) in St Ives. Every one of the 18 stops creates the perfect opportunity for some fun and a treat. Every resident will take part; some cycling with their feet, some with their hands. As the miles clock up so too, we hope, will the pennies. £500 is the target.

Thank you Southlands for lifting my spirits and making sure lockdown hasn’t managed to destroy the sense of humour and the sense of purpose that are so vital to the mental and physical health of us all. The fact that this amazing effort will help KingsCare to continue to exist and grow its work in the community is just the best added bonus I can think of.

Brilliant stuff. Well done and good luck. The correct answer to the cream tea conundrum is of course the Cornish way!
