Meals for those hit hard by Coronavirus

Meals for those hit hard by Coronavirus

Why we need your help

No one could have predicted the magnitude of the corona-virus outbreak in our communities. Everyone’s lives continue to change drastically each day as the spread continues. However, the families who are hardest hit by the outbreak face extra fears as they worry where their next meal will come from, particularly self-employed people such as taxi-drivers, and people working on zero-hour contracts who don’t qualify for the government’s scheme to recompense 80% of salaries.

Families with children who are reliant on free school meals face additional anxieties during this challenging time in light of school closures- additional meals for children at home over a 12-week period amounts to a total cost of around £450. Over 50% of families with children in Walker live in households below the national poverty line and qualify for free school meals. They are already facing difficulties less than a week into the lock-down.

Sadly, hungry children would often come to our café seeking food prior to this outbreak. In response to this, we developed a Holiday Hunger fundraising campaign at our community café in Walker Park, where we used your donations to provide hot community meals and healthy packed lunches each day to children in need.

In light of this outbreak, we’re fundraising to provide up to 3 take-away daily, nutritious meals to families in the area who are experiencing significant reductions to their income from our café in the park.  We will also deliver these meals to those who are unable to get to the centre- one less thing to worry about for families who are struggling during the corona-virus outbreak.

We are working with the 'Walker Workers' partnership of youth and community charities in the area to distribute the food to those who we know are most in need.

Help us to be kind and feed hungry families in Walker in these challenging times by donating to our appeal.
