A freezer to feed isolated people

A freezer to feed isolated people

Why we need your help

We need your help to buy a freezer
Not just any freezer, but a chest freezer big enough to feed everyone in Hackney who can't get to food whilsr the UK is in lockdown, because they don't have enough money, or are too ill.
WaterHouse is a charity restaurant run by local charity, Shoreditch Trust. The restaurant is currently closed, but we would like to open it to provide emergency deliveries for people who cannot get food.
We need to raise £608.96.
Who are we?
WaterHouse restaurant is run by Shoreditch Trust, a charity based in east London. Usually WaterHouse trains young people in Hackney to become chefs. It's one of many projects the charity runs. We’ve been helping Hackney for over 20 years. Each year we support around 500 people who are facing challenging situations, including:
people who have had a stroke
pregnant women and new mums who are facing homelessness, health problems or other difficulties
older people who are lonely or isolated
small businesses who are just getting started
Why a freezer?
FareShare, a food charity, is helping local restaurants who have had to close to redistribute the ingredients they will no longer need to the people who need them most.
We need to do this as fast as possible, as food will spoil quickly. The ingredients need to be frozen to preserve them, either as they arrive, or in reheatable meals made by Amrit, our chef.
WaterHouse has very limited freezer capacity because all of our usual dishes are made from fresh ingredients, from the chips, to the chicken burger, to the moule mariniere.
Who needs your help?
Lots of the people we support have been badly affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.
We are supporting everyone who usually uses our groups, walks and training. Each week the team call my mobile or video chat to see how people are, whether they are well, and if they have the information they need about Coronavirus. We also ask if everyone has the food and drink their family needs to last the week.
We are currently supporting hundreds of families in Hackney who do not have enough food to feed their family, and cannot obtain that food, either because they do not have enough money or because a member of the family is are at high risk if they are exposed to Coronavirus.
What happens if we exceed the £608.96 target?
All donations will be used to support people in Hackney now and in the future, this might include providing ingredient packs, giving mobile phones or mobile credit to older people who are alone, or providing support packs.
If we do not reach the target we will do what we can with what we have. This might mean providing meals only for those who are under ‘vulnerable shielding’ (if we can obtain ingredients) or providing a limited number of supermarket vouchers to people with children.
What will happen to the freezer afterwards?
WaterHouse and the young person’s chef scheme (Blue Marble Training) have been offered a bakery space in Hoxton with support from the Worshipful Company of Bakers and London Mayor’s Fund. The freezer will go to the new bakery (once it is built) to house dough.
How can I refer somebody who needs help?
If you are supporting someone who falls into the categories above, call us on 020 7033 7501 or email info@shoreditchtrust.org.uk. We will arrange the rest.
