Heart of Highbury
Why we need your help
Heart of Highbury will be a new community centre attached to Christ Church at the top of Highbury Fields.
We will transform an area currently occupied by a disused garage and create a bright, sustainable and accessible building.
Space will be available to hire for activities, meetings and parties, while about 30% of the time will be provided free of charge to not-for-profit community organisations supporting marginalised groups, with the aim of increasing social cohesion and reducing loneliness and isolation.
As well as flexible activity spaces and a small garden, the building will host our church office, moving it out of the vicarage basement. Instead of the current pop-up coffee stall, a small kitchen and cafe will provide tea and coffee.
Bold decisions taken in the 1980s to create activity spaces within the church building now play a large part in the lives of many local people. With this new project we are once again being ambitious and bold as we plan to offer a new and exciting opportunity for all.
Sensitively designed by Matthew Lloyd Architects, and with a flat green roof, the building satisfies the requirements of our conservation area. Islington Council has given planning permission and building work will start in early 2020. Of the total costs of about £990,000, £425,000 is already available through a bequest and endowments.
We invite you to help fund the balance of £565,000.
