The campaign will enable the construction of a new – and much needed – headquarters building for 1st Chertsey Scout Group.

Our current HQ - situated in the busy Fordwater Trading Estate in Chertsey - presents substantial difficulties for the Group on account of its age, location, and deteriorating fabric; it is not an appropriate base for modern-day Scouting.

The Group has experienced sustained growth in membership over recent years, and currently provide Scouting opportunities for over 130 children aged 6-17 years. All places are full and there are long waiting lists across all sections in the Group.  A significant proportion (>80%) of the of the young people involved live within recognised areas of deprivation (predominantly Chertsey St Ann’s ward), and we acknowledge that our activities address a need for youth development in the local area.

Planning Consent for the construction of a new HQ on Staines Lane, Chertsey, was granted in 2014, concluding around eight years of discussions, planning, consultations, and hard work from the Group and supporters in our community.

The Planning Consent is conditional on works starting before November 2017 and we are therefore keen to accelerate our fundraising activities to make the HQ a reality within the next two years.

We have received substantial support from Thorpe Park and their planning consultants Nathanial Litchfield Partners, and attracted grants from local authority and community sources (e.g. Chertsey Combined Charities, Surrey County Council Community Investment Fund), our fundraising is gathering pace.

This project heralds a new era for 1st Chertsey in terms of providing a fit-for-purpose, modern HQ for Scouting that will also serve as a new building resource for the local community.  The Group formed in 1909 and has been part of the local community for over 100 years.

We seek your support to enable it to last another 100.
