International Match Statistics
Why we need your help
To Cap it all – the GB & England International Match Statistics Project
This is a call for support from all Hockey International Club (HIC) members to help The Hockey Museum (THM) complete the task of compiling an accurate record of all GB & England international hockey matches and those who played in them.
At the end of last year, HIC and England Hockey teamed up with THM to support them in this important work. Once complete, GB/England Hockey will be able to provide you, as a former international player, with a record of your place in hockey’s international history – your GB and/or England ‘player number’ and a full listing of all the matches you played in.
We do need your support to help us fund this work.
Why is this project important?
The first England men’s international match was played in 1895 against Ireland in Richmond with the England women getting off the mark a year later when they played Ireland in Dublin. Since then, both teams have played over 900 international matches. A fantastic record but sadly, there is no full and accurate database of every match and a list of all those who played or officiated in them. As far as we know only Australia and Ireland have full records and we would like GB/England to be the next nation to get this job done!
What work will your donation support?
For the last year or so, a small group of volunteers from THM have been collating and digitising match and player information from official records, hockey magazines, press cuttings and other archive material. About 95% of the records are now complete but THM thinks that a significant amount of the missing data is buried in the extensive archive material recently acquired by THM from Patrick Rowley. To extract the match data from this set of records, THM will need professional support and it will cost in the region of £2500 to employ a museum archivist to get this job done over the next three months.
What will your support enable us to do next?
Our first priority will be to complete the GB match records ahead of next summer’s Tokyo Olympics so that that all those selected can be given a GB ‘player number’. Soon after that we hope to complete the England records. Once all the work is complete, every England player, past and present, will be given their own unique player number and a record of all their appearances. It is hoped that all international players will also receive an actual cap (or similar) that would be a visible memento of their playing achievement.
How to support us?
THM is a registered charity so you can support the progressing of this important work by donating to this campaign. Your support will make a real difference.
If you would prefer to send a cheque then there are details on THM website on how to do this. Please mark up your cheque with the words "International Match Stats" and complete and enclose a Gift Aid form if you are eligible to do so.
Another way you might be able to help is to dig out any international match records you still have for any of the matches where we still have incomplete data. Most of these matches are in the period between 1999 – 2006 and with the help of Helen Richardson Walsh and Simon Mantell, we will be looking to those of you who played in this period to see if you can help – you will be receiving e-mails in the coming weeks.
