St Francis de Sales School
Why we need your help
Please help us build a school for deaf children in Uganda.
Children with hearing problems have great difficulty getting an education in Uganda. Most are not able to attend nursery school and by the time they start state primary classes they have poor communication skills and are marginalised. Government primary schools have large classes, sometimes over 100 students, and children with hearing problems, given inadequate attention, soon fall further behind.
There are many children in Uganda who are deaf because of infections and side effects from the treatment of malaria.
Helping Uganda Schools is raising money to build the St Francis de Sales Nursery School for deaf children in Jinja, Uganda. We want to provide these children with the benefits of early years education, build self-esteem and help them learn a range of communication skills, including sign language.
Our experience has shown that children with disabilities can succeed and do well if they are given the right start and have skilled teachers trained in special needs education. Eleven years ago, HUGS built the Good Shepherd Special Needs school, in Western Uganda, which has shown us what great results can be obtained if specialised teachers and relatively small class sizes are the norm.
With your help we aim to welcome the first students, aged 5-8, into our nursery class in February 2021. The school will eventually care for 100 children and offer classes for all primary education. Trained teachers and a resident matron will look after the children.
Building work began at the end of 2019 and the building is half complete. You can see up to date pictures on HUGS’s Blog and website.
