Koda's story

Koda is a very special, well-mannered young dog who is good with people and other dogs. He is a smart boy who is good at his training. He will happily play fetch hours on end and he enjoys playing tug and throwing his jolly ball around. You really can’t find any faults with his behaviour, unlike his health...

Koda has been in our care since the beginning of February after being transferred from another RSPCA. We soon noticed that he struggled with exercise and made an abnormal noise in his throat when breathing in. After various tests and examinations the vets have found that Koda has a disorder called bilateral laryngeal paralysis. This is where the nerves do not control the muscles and cartilage in the larynx which causes difficulty in breathing and eating. As well as this disorder the vet had found that Koda had a mass on the side of his neck which turned out to be a saliva gland. This could have been caused by trauma to the neck or a deformity from birth.

To help Koda’s throat to function properly again he will need 2 operations, one to remove the saliva gland and another known as a laryngeal tie-back. This involves putting one or more permanent sutures in place to hold the cartilage in the neck open so that adequate air can pass through.  The salvia gland operation will cost approximately £800 and will take about 2 weeks to heal. Once we have raised £800 the first operation can take place. Then he can undergo the tie back surgery to correct the bilateral laryngeal paralysis this will cost between £1200 – 1500 and will take about 6-8 weeks recovery time. There is an 80% success rate and it will give Koda such a better quality of life.

This is where we need your help! Our Branch is self-funding, we are an independent charity and we rely on the generosity of the local community so that we can provide treatment and care for the animals at our Centre. The cost of these surgical procedures are very expensive. Please help us raise the money needed to pay for Koda’s operations by donating as little or as much as you can. Every penny counts in changing Koda’s life for the better!
