Miles from Home

Why we need your help

Even on your doorstep, you can feel miles from home. For some young people, home seems a long way away. They have a physical home, which is often very happy, but finding the way home is a path of discovering who you are, your values and your purpose. At Youth for Christ, we are committed to seeing young people find their way home. We want to see young people’s lives changed by Jesus, which starts at their point of need. We encounter more young people who need our support than we can manage. We need to extend the team to allow more young people to get our help. We are raising money to bring this closer to reality. We want an extra staff member to enable us to work with young people in three areas.

Unemployment support

Already, we are seeing that the increase in unemployment resulting from COVID is disproportionately affecting young people. Young people with fewer qualifications and skills face an even more significant challenge. Unemployment is a challenging situation and can present mental health challenges to young people who may already be struggling with life. We are developing a programme for young people who are looking for work. Each young person has a mentor to help them throughout their job search, helping them with application skills, interview technique, encouragement, and support. Where young people need additional skills or qualifications, we will provide tutoring and relevant work experience. Extra support around holding down a job, budgeting and access to services such as food banks will be provided where applicable. We currently have no government funding for this new project.

Mentoring

Our mentoring service in schools provides effective support to young people in various schools across the county. Many mentoring services focus on high-level needs, but young people with lower-level needs often fall through the gaps. Ironically, dealing with these needs earlier prevents the need for higher levels of support later. These young people need help, yet there is frequently limited funding for supporting these young people. We step into this place to provide timely support to help young people flourish.

Online Gaming

For many young people, online gaming is a part of their life that brings them together with their friends. In a year where time outside is limited, we have seen the benefits of working with young people in the space they go. Online gaming is one space that we are developing with young people, providing a safe environment where they can spend time with friends get support from adults who care. Imagine a traditional youth centre, but online. Rocket League and Fortnite replace Table Tennis and the pool table. A server with text, voice and video chat rooms replace the Youth Centre.

To make this a reality, we will walk the Cotswold Way, all 100 miles, from Bath to Chipping Campden. Over five days, we will cover the distance to help bring young people closer to home.

We would like to thank Cotteswold Dairies for sponsoring this challenge.
