Open Door Sponsored Walk

Why we need your help

As part of our 45th anniversary celebrations and to mark World Mental Health Day, we were planning to participate in CLASP’s ‘Walking out of Darkness’ sponsored walk event on Sunday October 10th. The event organisers have now postponed the event until 2022 but undeterred, we have organised our own team event to mark World Mental Health Day and to raise much needed funds to enable us to help the many young people waiting to be seen at Open Door.

Staff, Trustees, volunteers and supporters will be walking the route of the Moselle River, which flows across Haringey from the Northern Heights in the West to the River Lea in the East.

We will follow the course of the river from our Crouch End service to Open Door Tottenham based in The Trampery on 639 High Road N17 8AA.

Whilst rich in historic and contemporary interest, this walk from west to east Haringey also follows the route of declining physical and mental health. Average life expectancy in east Haringey is 9 years lower than in the west, and rates of mental ill health are significantly higher in the east. The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day is ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’ and aims to highlight mental health inequality locally and globally, made more acute by the COVID 19 pandemic.

Eight years ago, Open Door raised funds to establish a second permanent base in the heart of Tottenham, to improve access to high quality professional mental health care for teenagers, young adults and their families. We are now part of this vibrant and creative community and are working alongside others to redress the health inequalities which continue to cast their shadow.

Please sponsor Team Open Door to enable us to help more young people across the whole of Haringey.

Whilst Open Door is working with more young people than ever before, we struggle to keep up with demand as referrals reach all time levels in the aftermath of the pandemic. More than 150 young people are currently waiting for therapy and the number keeps rising.

Every pound raised will be spent enabling us to help more young people more quickly.
