Pageant Loans
Why we need your help
Micro-loans are targeted at people who are too poor for normal banks to deal with. Pageant’s scheme in The Gambia started in 2005 with 1500 Dalasis (approximately £20) lent to each of six women in the village of Sika in The Gambia's North Bank region. The innovative feature of Pageant's schemes is that each is administered locally and when the loans get repaid, the money is recycled to start a scheme with a new group of women. The Sika scheme produced enormous benefits to the local economy, a spin-off being the establishment of the Sika Village Market. Since then loan schemes have been started in Bakalarr, Gunjur, Jambanjelly, Siffoe, Kanikunda and Brikama. More schemes are being organised. Currently each participant gets 1800 Dalasis (about £30), so each scheme needs about £180. Whatever amount you donate, it will help to fund one of the the next new schemes we set up.
