Science Teachers' Workshops

Why we need your help

workshop in progress
Gambian school children mostly learn their science from the blackboard. They seldom see or use any practical equipment due to lack of funds for such things. As well as lacking practical science facilities, few schools have access to microscopes. So since 2006, Pageant has run annual microscopy and science workshops for Gambian teachers to show them how to give practical science lessons in schools which often lack facilities such as mains electricity and running water.
As well as providing volunteer tutors, Pageant supplies training manuals, microscopes and science experiment kits, and the the teachers can then take these back to their schools. The science kits are comprised of everyday low cost objects, so that teachers can assemble more kits for use in their schools. Some microscopes are provided by generous corporate donors, but we need to purchase most of them.
We believe that our workshops have a huge impact. For instance three workshop sessions each involving 20 teachers, with each teacher then interfacing with 200 children, could improve practical science teaching for around 12,000 children every year. Pageant has to find several thousand pounds each year to fund these workshops, so please help us with a donation.
