Project My Girl

Why we need your help

Project My Girl

Since 2015 Fisherman's Rest has been working in schools to encourage both boys and girls to pursue education, stay in school and make personal and social change in their lives.

School dropout rates in rural Malawi are high, with hundreds of students not reaching their potential or dreams.  Some of the reasons girls fail to complete primary education is early marriage, early pregnancy and girls not being deemed worthy enough to finish school.

Through Project My Girl, these beliefs are addressed and challenged with both boys and girls in primary school who have reached puberty.  The project gives a voice to topics which are otherwise taboo or avoided.

Girls are equipped with accurate information about Menstrual Hygiene and given cloth sanitary pads to allow them to not only attend school, but to attend school with dignity.

The project costs GBP 20,000 per year to support 23 primary schools and provide a schools worker, networking workshops and support groups for girls as well as the pads and school training.
