Rice and Buckets Appeal
Why we need your help
Updated October 2020:
Sierra Leone, as well as the rest of the world, continues to be affected by the knock on effects of COVID-19. While they have not seen a large number of cases, there have been changes to day to day life (mandatory face masks in public, restrictions on movement, curfews etc.) as well as price increases on food and essentials. Many people struggle to provide for their families.
We are continuting to help where we can by providing rice, buckets and handwashing stations via this Rice and Buckets appeal.
* donations of any amount are welcome, we have added the suggested donation amounts and photos as a guide.
Updated April 2020:
We are living in extraordinary times. Fights over toilet roll and pasta in the supermarket, shopping centres empty, schools closed without a reopening date, the UK on lockdown.
Sierra Leone has experienced something of this fear and craziness only 4 years ago when Ebola ravaged the country infecting 5 people per hour. In total 11,000 people died in the west African outbreak. Now the country is facing another threat, COVID-19, like the rest of the world. However, it is a country that will struggle to cope. This time there will be no aid teams. The country has just a few ventilators and very little medical oxygen. The borders are closed. Prices for food and every day essentials have already started rising
This emergency rice and bucket fund is to help support our most vulnerable families. So if you can afford to stock up your cupboards and bathrooms please consider donating to the fund.
We will use any funds received to purchase rice or hand washing buckets/stations for those who need them most.
We have started the ball rolling by purchasing and supplying 1275 kilos of rice and seven hand washing buckets with taps from funds raised by Helen, Sarah, Charles, Dean and Tom in the recent Vitality Big Half Marathon and by Adele and Teddy Salone in their recent epic walking challenge.
Following Sierra Leone's three day lockdown which started on 5th April, the Government of Sierra Leone have annoucned a 14 day partial lockdown starting at midnight on 11th April. Many of our families live day to day and will struggle enormously during this lockdown - please consider helping us to make this difficult time a little easier.
