hyh Nightstop Herts Appeal
Why we need your help
Nightstop Herts provides emergency, short-term accommodation for a young person in the home of an approved hyh volunteer.
The service can provide a safety net at a time of great vulnerability to those forced to leave their home.
The aim is to prevent young people from sleeping rough, "sofa surfing", or staying in unsuitable accommodation where they could be at risk.
At a cost of just £25 a night, the scheme offers young people a safe, warm place to stay, a listening ear and ‘breathing space' to work through their options with hyh workers.
Katie, who has learning difficulties, was asked to leave the family home by her Mum when their relationship broke down due to repeated arguments about the way the teenager was spending her money.
A placement in a volunteer host’s home was found in Katie’s home town.
While there, Katie continued her part-time job and also enrolled on a skills course to help her with English, Maths and other functional skills.
Over a two-week period Katie’s relationship with her Mum began to improve.
Sessions with the hyh Mediation Team were arranged and these helped Mum and Katie to talk through their differences.
When Katie returned home, the family found communication was easier and they were arguing less.
Six months on, Katie is still in the family home.
hyh's focus is on preventing homelessness – from education in schools and family mediation through to providing emergency accommodation for a young person in a volunteer’s house, supporting them in their first homes or caring for adults who have mental health needs and housing issues.
