A little bit of context

We've been running the Mobile Youth Venue (Youth Bus) for the past 7 years and hundreds of young people have benefitted. We've had a sweet partnership with Waltham Forest council: they own the bus and pay for its maintenance and we find the funds to staff it - it's worked a treat.

The bus that makes a difference

There's always a whole range of activities for young people (aged 11 to 19) on the bus, but more than that, our youth workers are there to support young people and help them develop skills and confidence.

Young people like Sean, who said of the Mobile Youth Venue:

"It gives young people a place to go, where they can stay out of trouble, it keeps young people safe and off the streets."

and Saima:

" We should keep it because there is not much for young people to do. The bus is important. Youth workers help young people with issues and confidence. "

But there’s a problem

But now the council have told us that they can't afford to keep it any longer. With all the cuts they've had from central government they just can't keep paying for it. If we don't do something there won't be any Youth Bus in Waltham Forest. The young people that currently come along to our sessions and those who might come in the future will miss out. We believe that the opportunities young people get at the bus and the relationships with our youth work staff and volunteers can be transformative.

Here’s what we’re doing about it

The council have offered to give us the bus! It doesn't have an huge resale value, but we're still really chuffed that they are willing.

However - while we won't have to buy the bus from them we do have to find the funds to pay for it's upkeep. We need to pay for insurance, tax and maintenance as well as parking costs. We estimate all this will cost us about £5,000 per year and we want to raise some money for contingency too just in case something breaks during the year.

In the future we want to look at a range of ways that can help fund the ongoing cost, but at the moment time is short - we only have until the middle of July to come up with the money we need.

You can join us

We'd love for you to join us in keeping this amazing facility for young people on the road. Help us save the bus! Pledge a small amount of money and spread the word about it via your email and social media contacts. We'll easily be able to reach our £7,000 target if many people can do just a little for us.

Youth projects such as this are vital if we are to keep our young people creatively occupied, engaging happily with one another (with full celebration of diversity and difference) and ultimately safe with strong feelings of self worth.

Hi! So glad to hear that you will be able to continue with the bus! God bless!
