SOS - Save our Sports!

Why we need your help

We are appealing  for help to raise £4,000 to replace sports equipment stolen from our brain injury centre in Birmingham and ensure our sports services can start up again as soon as possible post coronavirus.
We were devastated to find thieves had broken into our Leighton House centre in Rednal and stolen virtually all of our fishing equipment and some of our archery kit as well.
Even in normal times, this is not something we could easily replace. And these are far from normal times.
That's why we need your help.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our centres are currently closed and many of our staff have been furloughed. However the staff remaining are working hard making welfare calls, offering doorstep visits and running online sessions to keep in contact with our brain injured clients during these difficult times and ensure their health & wellbeing.
The feedback from this has been very positive - but they are all telling us how much they miss attending our centres - and how much they are missing sports too.
Most could not participate in sport without the extra support of our trained staff, yet they get so much from it.
Fishing for example is one of our most popular sports. It provides an opportunity to be more active, get some fresh air, and enjoy nature. An opportunity to return to a hobby enjoyed pre-brain injury or take up a new interest. It's also a chance to socialise and make friends. And there's nothing like landing a fish to feel you've achieved something!
Knowing the joy and the benefits it brings, we are determined to start fishing and other sports on the summer timetable (cycling, table-tennis, cricket, air rifle shooting , archery and golf) as soon as we possibly can post-lockdown.
But to do this, we need to raise funds to replace the stolen equipment and run the sports programme.
A small donation today can go a long way in helping us achieve this, and will be appreciated by everyone at headway Birmingham & Solihull.
Note our fishing equipment was originally purchased thanks to a grant from The Angling Trust and included items designed for use by those with disabilities. We have had some kind offers of donated fishing gear from the local community and we hope to supplement this by purchasing the specialist kit required.

UPDATE 22 May 2020

Our client John France, Headway's Sports Personality of The Year for 2019, has decided he would like to do his bit to help raise funds towards our Sports Programme. Inspired by Captain Tom (or Sir Tom!), he has therefore set himself the challenge of walking up and down his path 500 times over the course of a week, and very much hopes you will make a small contribution to our SOS Save Our Sports fund in recognition of his efforts. Thank you!
