Saving Okonjima's Rhinos

Saving Okonjima's Rhinos

Why we need your help

The White Rhino is one of the most ancient species in the world and is among the most threatened species in the world. Rhinos have three main enemies: Diminishing Habitats, Poachers, and Trophy Hunters. Their horns are more valuable by weight than gold and diamonds, so poachers are constantly finding new ways to defeat and evade defensive measures to kill and harvest them. And because the rarity of non-de-horned rhinos is increasing, it is becoming more and more common for affluent trophy hunters to pay exorbitant fees to secure the rights to hunt horned rhinos, fees that most conservationist organizations can’t even begin to compete with in order to save the lives of these animals. Here at Okonjima, we’ve had the privilege to act as the guardians of five rhinos on behalf of their legal owner since 2015, keeping them safe from those three threats. In fact, arrangements like these are quite common with nature reserves here in Africa and typically benefit everyone involved. However, life is unpredictable, and these rhinos are now in danger due to a new threat: Covid 19. As we all know, Covid has been hard on everyone, and the current owner of these animals is in the difficult position of having to sell them to settle some financial hardships that have come as the result of this global pandemic. Tragically, now, the highest bidders for these animals are trophy hunters. Both the family here at Okonjima and the current owner want to avoid them being sold as trophy animals, and this is where you come in. We wish we could buy these animals independently, but the tragic slowdown of the tourism industry here in Namibia has struck us hard as well and it’s just not possible for us to do so. We are humbly asking for your help to raise the funds necessary to buy these animals outright and allow them to continue living here at Okonjima, safe and comfortable within the confines of our fences and under the watchful eyes of our guardians. If we are unable to raise the necessary amount, the eventual hunting and killing of these animals is a certainty!

You can save their lives by donating to our campaign!

Okonjima has been given a window of opportunity to buy the freedom of these rhinos for a flat fee, and therefore become their permanent home, ensuring that they will continue to enjoy the happiness and comfort they have grown accustomed to for the rest of their lives. But we need your help to raise the funds necessary to do so.

Our rhinos benefit from large natural environments to roam around while under the watchful protection of our rhino guardians, and our guests can view them and learn about them in their natural habitats. We want to keep them here where they can live healthy and natural lives without fear of being hunted. With your help, we can save these lives, and if we surpass our goal, we will be able to expand our ability to preserve and serve all our amazing animals here.

Thank you so much. Together we can save the lives of these amazing animals.
