The Hackney School of Food sits at the heart of the first of Chefs in Schools three key programme strands: What Works Well. As a community cookery school in King's Park ward, Hackney, it will impact thousands and children and their families and enable Chefs in Schools to research and develop a new approach and a new vision for school food.

We are delighted to have raised £170,000 in capital funding so far, two thirds of the funds required for Phase I, the renovation and refit of the buildings. The contractors have been appointed and are ready to go. We simply need to raise the remaining £70,000 to kick off the build. If we can do this, and break ground next month, the School of Food should be up and running early in the new school year. Any funds beyond this target will mean we can also get started on Phase 2, developing the grounds, gardens and orchard, which will enable us to integrate vital on cultivating and growing, ensuring children will have a holistic, sustainable knowledge of food.

We are building a circle of individual supporters to bring in this last, crucial amount of capital support. We are setting ourselves a deadline of 17th June to ensure that the build can begin on 18th July.

This circle of donors will be part of a lasting legacy, both physical and social, reflecting our community’s commitment to a healthy future in London and beyond.

All supporters will be invited to special events and workshops in the School of Food when up and running -- more details to come! Your name will also be listed on the Thank You wall at the School. Founding Patrons will also have the opportunity to host a private evening in the space.

About The Hackney School of Food:

In a joint venture with the Leap Federation of Schools, a derelict caretaker’s premises in the grounds of Mandeville Primary will become the Hackney School of Food.  Here, we will teach 5,000 children – and their families – from schools and communities across Hackney to cook savoury, nutritious, low cost meals each year. We will use this community cookery school to further trial and develop our teaching curriculum and build an evidence base of What Works Well in school food. The School of Food will offer:

  • Training for chefs who want to work in a school kitchen and for those who want to learn new skills to cook fresh food in their schools

  • School holiday programmes for children and young people to learn healthy cooking skills and provide participants with a home-cooked lunch to ensure that they do not go hungry during the holiday

  • Cookery classes for pupils from local primary and secondary schools during school-time

  • A seasonal planting scheme

  • Nutrition and healthy cooking classes alongside shopping and budgeting workshops for adults

  • Opportunities and venue for local community gardening groups

Hackney School of Food will also be the research and development base for Chefs in Schools. From here we will develop:

  • Evidence-based best practice in cookery teaching for schools with varying facilities and teaching experience

  • Our school chef training programme, both to train private sector chefs across into school kitchens, and unskilled workers to take on roles in school kitchens, as well as a recognised skills accreditation

The designs for the School of Food will be freely available to other schools and communities to convert their disused buildings into cookery teaching spaces.

It will function as a model cookery school and productive gardens to a diverse and deprived community, enabling access to an oasis of learning about the natural environment in one of the most urban and challenged parts of London, creating a lasting legacy, both physical and social, reflecting the community’s commitment to a healthy future.
