SDR SOS Appeal - Why we need your help

The South Devon Railway (SDR) has had to suspend services and close its shop and refreshment rooms during the current Coronavirus pandemic in line with government advice. It is unlikely that we will be able to open again until at least halfway through our usual operating season, meaning a potential loss of £500,000 of revenue for the steam railway attraction. This couldn't have come at a worse time for the charity, with services stopping only a few days after they began following the winter closed period, during which the SDR heavily invested in its infrastructure. We urgently need your help to allow us to keep steaming into the future. Please watch our appeal video below and donate as generously as you can - we realise these are difficult times for everyone but without your help we may not have a railway for people of all ages to enjoy again.

Closed - but bills still to be paid!

Despite having services suspended, there is still vital work that needs to be done (and bills to pay!) to protect the railway and allow us to keep providing pleasure and educational opportunities for many future generations to come. A steam railway can't just be shut down - we still need to maintain our track, structures and buildings and continue to care for our locomotives and carriages. Over the winter closed season we heavily invested in replacing worn out track and fully restoring vintage carriages, and were reliant upon the income generated by running trains and special events to build up our depleted cash reserves. We also suffered damage to two of our bridges, including the iconic Nursery Pool Bridge which takes the railway over the River Dart near Buckfastleigh. This bridge suffered damage during the storms in February this year and needs urgent repair work to protect it from deteriorating further. This will be costly so we urgently need your help to allow this work to take place.

Stay safe, I hope this small contribution to the pot will help keep the railway there for us to enjoy in happier days to come.
