So why help the Food Hub?

In April 2016 Shrewsbury Food Hub was born. Working out of the boot of cars in M&S carpark, a small group of environmentally minded volunteers decided to stop good food going to waste and adding to landfill, knowing that people in the community could use this good surplus food.

At the end of our first year, the Food Hub had recruited 45 volunteers, collecting from 5 supermarkets and had built a network of 20 community groups. In that first year, they rescued 14 tonnes of food of vegetables, fruit, random tins and bakery products.

Fast forward 5 years to 2021. The Food Hub now has its own van to support the collection and redistribution of food and a fully equipped depot to support surplus chilled and frozen food. We are powered by over 100 volunteers and in the last 12 months are on track to save 140 tonnes of good food from waste - that’s enough for 330,000 meals.

In December 2020 alone they saved more tonnage than they did in their first year.

This food has helped over 2000 people each week in Shrewsbury eat better and save money.
