SLA Europe and the Half Moon Theatre

Why we need your help

At the start of 2020, SLA Europe was busy making plans for an outreach event to be held beyond its traditional territory, in Limehouse at the Half Moon Theatre. We felt this would prove a good opportunity to show the wide variety of LIS careers to those who would not normally come across them, whilst helping fund a great cause.
The Half Moon specialises in using drama as a tool for learning and personal development with children and young people. It aims to be as inclusive and accessible as possible, and to engage with those who may often not have access to quality arts activity. It is based in Tower Hamlets, which has the highest rate of children living in poverty in the UK, at 53%, almost 10% higher than the next local authority.
Before we could hit the send button, Coronavirus arrived and SLA Europe rapidly moved all its events online. The impact of lockdown upon the Half Moon has been dramatic with the loss of almost all its earned income. Fortunately, the Half Moon’s immediate future was secured through flexibility from its core funders, Arts Council England and Tower Hamlets Council.
However, the Half Moon still needs to find ways to help make up its earned income. If you have found this webinar interesting and are in a position to afford to do so, we at SLA Europe would be very grateful if you are able to make a donation to the Half Moon.
The Half Moon Today
Once appropriate safeguarding was in place, the Half Moon began delivering creative sessions online for its Youth Theatres groups and worked with Tower Hamlets Children’s Centres to create digital resources for pre-school children and their families. It launched its Half Moon At Home digital offer of free access to filmed productions and an archive of spoken word monologues, as an alternative to live performance. It is currently preparing for three weeks of Summer Schools for 11 year olds transitioning to secondary school.
