Steps For Tech

Why we need your help

Working towards solving the issue of digital inequality in Sheffield, one step at a time.

There are three simple things you can do to help our campaign.

1. Start logging those kilometres on our Strava Club and see how far we can go!

2. Donate £5 if you're taking part in the Strava challenge

3. Share this link with your friends and family and encourage them to donate - even if they're not taking part in the distance challenge, every donation helps!

What's the issue?

For all of us, the pandemic has forced most of our lives online. From remote learning to online shopping, weekly Zoom quizzes to booking a Covid test, the internet has become an intrinsic part of life. Yet 11.3 million people in the UK don't have the basic digital skills they need to thrive in today's world (Good Things Foundation).

Laptops For Kids, which began in Sheffield in September 2020, aims to increase access to learning for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds across the North of England. The non-profit campaign sources donations of new and used devices, carries out secure erasure and distributes to schools according to need.

It is estimated that there are around 4800 families across Sheffield who don’t have reliable access to the internet. To work towards solving this problem Laptops for Kids have launched the second stage of their campaign, Cash for Connectivity. They are aiming to raise £1.2million to purchase internet-enabled dongles for households across the North of England who need to get online.

What can I do?

To aid their efforts we are asking you - the students of the University of Sheffield - to run, walk, jog, or cycle as far as you can to raise money and awareness for digital inequality.

As well as racking up the kilometres, we're asking all participants to donate £5 to the cause. All money raised will go directly to the Cash For Connectivity campaign, helping children and families across the city, so please also share this fundraising link with your friends and family.

Join our Strava Club, start logging your distances and let's see how far we can go!

We have 3 checkpoints to represent data on digital inequality in Sheffield:

  • 4800km - to represent the number of families in Sheffield who do not have reliable access to the internet
  • 8000km - to represent the number of devices the campaign are planning to distribute across the city
  • 14,000km - the number of laptops needed across the whole of South Yorkshire, to ensure that every child who needs a device to learn has access to one

Every step you log will go towards these totals, so get out there and show us your PBs to raise money for some GBs!

Please note, you can donate to this fundraiser even if you don't want to join Strava! Use the buttons below to donate directly to help raise money to combat digital inequality in Sheffield.
