1 in 10 children in the UK are living with parents who struggle to put food on the table. This means an estimated 870,000 children in England go to bed hungry because their parents are unable to provide the meals they need.

Research shows that if a child arrives at school hungry, they lose one hour of learning time a day. Hungry children are unable to concentrate, are more lethargic and less likely to learn. Perhaps more worryingly, a quarter of teachers have seen a child fall asleep in the classroom through lack of food or drink. A hungry child will find it harder to concentrate and learn at school than his/her peers and so hunger results in significant lost potential.

With this in mind, we are delighted that The Evening Standard, The Independent, London Live and The Big Half supported our Help A Hungry Child Appeal, from 27th November 2017, to 5th March 2018.

Funds raised from the appeal will enable The Felix Project to aid a new programme in primary schools to help channel food directly to those young children and their families who are in the greatest need. This will ensure no child in any primary school supported by The Felix Project ever goes to bed hungry.

At the end of the school day, children and their families will be guided to a welcoming Felix ‘market stall’ and be able to fill a Felix bag with a healthy and delicious selection of fruit and veg and other items to take home.

The programme will be established in 120 of London’s most deprived schools over the next 2 years, benefitting more than 50,000 children and their families. Every £1 donated to the appeal will ensure a primary school child and their family has the food needed for a nutritious meal otherwise deprived to them.

This was raised during our recent (and impromptu!) fresh juice stand in Hammersmith. The kids worked all day and the total is thanks to generous neighbours who enjoyed a chat and some fresh OJ on the first warm day of spring! Proud to be on Team Felix!

I saw an article from a school head in Cumbria. She wanted to remain anonymous but kept her school open in the snow and ice recently because she knew that the meal provided would be the only meal some of the kids would get. There was a 45 percent turnout.
