The Island Emergency COVID-19 Appeal

Why we need your help

We need to urgently raise £25,000 to enable us to respond quickly to those most in need of a food Hamper of Hope and 24-hour phone support.

On Wednesday 18 March, we (The Island) had to make the heart-breaking decision to temporary close our office and our mentoring services down amid CORVID-19.

This has resulted in a high number of vulnerable York children and young people no longer being able to access our services, which could result in their mental, emotional and social wellbeing being negatively impacted upon.

Since the temporary closure of The Island, we've received an overwhelming number of calls from mentees’ families and guardians who due no fault of their own have little or no income due to the outbreak. This is resulted in families and guardians unable to feed their children a well-balanced meal, with some families skipping meals in order to prolong food supplies.

One service that we provide to Island families is a food bank, which over the last week, demand has increased at an alarming rate and our staff team and volunteers have been working flat out in order to keep up with the demand.

Our aim is to be able to provide every vulnerable Island family with a large Hamper of Hope every two weeks for the next three months and we have a dedicated team ready to make up and deliver these much-needed hampers.

In addition to this, we’ll also need to operate a 24 hour a day phone line so that mentees, families and carers can get in touch for telephone support as well as source indoor activities such as arts and crafts materials and board games to keep our mentees preoccupied during this uncertain time.

The £25,000 will enable us to pay for fuel, operate the 24 hour a day phone line, as well as purchase food essentials (if needed) so that every Hamper of Hope given out is filled with food which will enable a balanced and healthy diet not just for the mentee, but also for their loved ones.

Whether you can donate, £10, £100 or even £1000, your donation will ensure that we can support vulnerable York families most in need and ensure they come out of this, healthy, positive and resilient.

Thank you - on behalf of The Island
