SBS Christmas Social for Service Users: Request for Donations

Every year for a number of years, SBS has hosted a Christmas social for abused and marginalised black and minority women and children who use our services. Many of the women arrive at our centre in varying degrees of vulnerability and distress. They lack the confidence and support needed to live free from abuse, destitution and isolation.

Our Christmas social attracts about 70 women and 40 children. It is one of the most important events that we organise and is eagerly awaited by our users who otherwise have no or few occasions to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Like all of us, they have a desire to get together for a few hours; to laugh and have fun in a safe environment without feeling anxious or judged. They tell us that it is an evening they always remember because they feel like human beings again.

Due to the generosity of our donors last year we were able to accommodate 70 women and 50 children in a beautiful venue with a sit down meal. We were also able to hire an entertainer for the children and as promised SBS was able to give a present to every child.

For many women this is the only social event they go to all year and for some children it is the only present they get. However, in the current climate of austerity and cuts we are struggling to find funds to continue social activities and events for our users. Social events like these always fall to the bottom of our list of priorities and yet they make an immense difference to women and children’s recovery process.

This year, we would again like to give the women and children another positive social experience so we are looking to raise £3,500 - funds that we always struggle to scrape together. We are therefore appealing to you for donations to help us continue to hold this event.

We would be most grateful if you were able to contribute in some way. In return we will acknowledge you as a donor on our website and also on our events page. We set out below what your financial support can pay for, but any contribution will be greatly appreciated.

£25 will pay for the cost of a venue, food, soft drinks, music and a present for a child.

£20 will pay for the cost of a venue, food, soft drinks and music for one woman.
