International Peace Initiatives, Kenya

Based in Meru County, central Kenya, International Peace Initiatives (IPI) is spearheaded by Dr Karambu Ringera, who, in 2002, decided to do something to mitigate the effects of poverty, HIV/AIDS and discrimination in her local area by setting up a grass-roots project focused on improving the future of local children.

KACH children

One key initiative is IPI’s Amani Community Home, which takes care of approximately 20 children whilst helping them maintain close ties with their families, who are often too affected by the consequences of HIV/AIDS or poverty to look after them. We raise funds to help IPI provide  regular meals, buy school uniforms, and pay school fees.

At the same time, IPI helps HIV+ mothers to become skilled in different crafts so that they can earn an income, slowly regain their strength, and, if their children are at Amani, maybe even resume care of them. Since December 2012, Ecologia has managed to raise over £20,000 to help IPI develop this project. The women learn how to make detergent and jewellery, as well as tie-dye, tailor and weave to support themselves.

Other initiatives include a permaculture garden, fundraising for an internet mast, a youth leadership programme, and HIV awareness campaigns, to try to stop the spread of the virus.
