Parents Protect!
In recent times we have come to understand that children are more likely to be sexually abused by people they know rather than by strangers. These are not the ‘monsters’ often portrayed by the media, but familiar and trusted adults, which can make disclosure far more difficult.
It is vital that parents, carers and other adults are equipped with sound information to help them protect their children. This includes:- understanding abuser behaviour including how and why people sexually abuse children, the barriers to identifying harmful behaviour and how to overcome them, how sex offenders are managed in the community, and positive actions adults can take to prevent child sexual abuse. Youngsters are immediately safer when parents and carers take the time to understand potential risks and take protective measures.
As adults, there is much we can do to help protect children from harm by taking some simple steps and Parents Protect! helps people do this.
Our online resource, www.parentsprotect.co.uk and our 90 minute Parents Protect! public education sessions help adults to:
Understand potential risks
Recognise the signs of possible abuse in children
Are aware of inappropriate behaviour in adults
Know where to go for help if we have concerns and would like to talk about them
The Online Learning Programme enables people to work through a number of topics at their own pace. The Programme aims to:
Give the information needed about child sexual abuse
Show how to create a family safety plan
Tell people who is available to talk to if there are concerns
Support our Parents Protect! work will help support parents and carers protect their children
