Stevenage Haven exists to provide shelter and support for single people experiencing homelessness in Stevenage and North Herts.  We encourage our clients, not just to get back on their feet, but to move on into secure and settled lives in the local community.

Key to how we work is helping in a sustainable way and thus break the often familiar cycle of homelessness. Through our dedicated team of staff, trustees and volunteers we operate two hostels, The Haven in Stevenage and The Sanctuary in Hitchin, and manage 10 move-on properties, transforming the lives of around 150 people every year.

Our hostels:

Stevenage Haven, Stevenage

Our new, purpose-built emergency hostel in Stevenage opened in October 2015. The hostel has 40 single, en-suite rooms, a dining room, lounge area and consultation rooms for staff to meet with clients. The provision of individual rooms enables greater flexibility in helping those with challenging support needs.

North Herts Sanctuary, Hitchin

Since July 2014, Stevenage Haven has been providing the operational management and services at this hostel in Hitchin. The hostel houses up to 17 clients in four dormitories. There are showers, wash facilities and a laundry, a communal living / dining area and IT suite.

Three meals per day are available at both hostels.

Our work:

Our trained, dedicated Housing Support Workers actively engage with clients on entry and then at regular support plan review meetings. The client’s needs are assessed on arrival and through ongoing assessment, they work together to develop individual action plans which signpost relevant internal and external support and activities. Housing Support Workers also help clients with day-to-day issues and then work with the floating support team when it becomes appropriate to look for suitable move-on accommodation.

Our Floating Support Team can be accessed by clients at both hostels. We have been able to expand the service and now have three floating support workers who work with clients and their key workers to find suitable move on accommodation. The main focus of floating support is to prevent people feeling isolated and offer assistance with dealing with bills, budgeting and threats to their tenancy. A more recent development is to work with private landlords, local authorities and support agencies such as CAB, to offer help to vulnerable individuals at risk of eviction with a view of preventing homelessness.

Day services, activities and training are provided to clients in both hostels. One of the key services is a programme known as It's Your Move, which focuses on five areas of support

*be healthy*  *economic well being*  *enjoy and achieve*  *making a positive contribution*  *staying safe*
