The Candlelighters Trust
Who we are
Yorkshire's pre-eminent childhood cancer charity supporting children, teenagers and their families. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upside down in an instant. Not just for the child but for their parents, siblings and family friends. Priorities change and everyday concerns sudddenly seem trivial. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, physically, emotionally and even financially. Helping and supporting those children and their families throughout that journey is why Candlelighters was formed more than 40 years ago and it is why we are still here today.
The charity was founded and is still run by parents of children who have or have had cancer or leukaemia and the medical staff who treat them. This means that we understand the trauma and the turmoil of that diagnosis and how the support and care needed may differ from family to family. Whether it be through the support of our friendly staff and experienced counsellors, that "home away from home" environment we nurture on the ward in Leeds, or the vital research into new treatments, we are here to help.
We fund essential staff and medical equipment at the children's cancer & leukaemia Unit at Leeds General Infirmary as well as the supply of toys, books, and age appropriate activities for both teenagers and children to enjoy while they are being treated. We also support the parents, siblings and family of children diagnosed with cancer, as everyone involved requires special help at times getting through the treatment and recovery process.
