Stories

Bolton Sailing Club needed help with the costs of a new jetty for hoisting sailors out of a wheel chair straight into the boat.

Matthew Daly takes up the story:

"Before we had only one standard hydronic hoist and had to hoist one person at a time, on land, then wheel them down in to the water on the trolley. Now it's much safer and easier to use.
We have been able to grow from two sailors and six volunteers to nine sailors and around twelve volunteers and we're still growing, all thanks to the new jetty. Other clubs as far away as Scotland now want to come down and train at our club."

Covenham Sailability’s Navigate project is working with NAVIGO, the acute mental health provider, to deliver training to people living with mental health issues. They needed to upskill their volunteers to have more helpers and increase the training support to 1:1 or 2:1 ensuring the more vulnerable trainees feel fully supported and can maximise their chances of progress and success.

Judith Templeman takes up the story:

"From our initial pilot for eight people, three have achieved PowerBoat level 2; two of the same three are working to their RYA level 2 adult sailing award; two have achieved Powerability silver and three have achieved Sailability silver.

Another two have become very useful off water support helpers. They are confident in rigging craft and helping to launch and with maintenance.

The group has developed huge trust in the volunteers delivering the training and they have also formed a self-supporting group. When they first started coming they didn’t know each other at all. Now they can prepare for the conditions on the day with confidence and work as a cohesive team."
