The Matthew Elvidge Trust

The Matthew Elvidge Trust

Who we are

The Matthew Elvidge Trust

The Trust was formed in 2010 shortly after our son, Matthew, took his own life after a short period of anxiety and depression and, as is so common, we were not fully aware of the depth of his depression and how to help.

We therefore do as much as we can to help others who are, or may be, in a similar situation, by increasing the awareness of depression and other mental health issues and, we hope, preventing other young people from taking their own lives.

What are the Objectives of the Trust?

The objectives of the Trust are to increase awareness of the importance of good emotional wellbeing and mental health including:

  • developing the skills to keep healthy
  • understanding the signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression and other mental health illnesses
  • developing the skills to cope with difficult times in your life and the resilience to recover
  • having the confidence to ask for....and receiving appropriate help early

We also aim to reduce the stigma associated with anxiety and depression and support organisations that work in the field of:

  • emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • suicide prevention
  • support after suicide

How we achieve these objectives?

We achieve these objectives by supporting a number of organisations that work in universities and schools.

We fund and advise Student Minds, Nigtline and Students against Depression.

We also fund the 'Partnership for Wellbeing and Mental Health in Schools', which promotes a whole school approach to emotional wellbeing education.

The Trust sits on a number of Government Advisory Boards to provide advice and influence policy across the Departments of Health and Education.

How is the Trust be funded?

The Trust is funded by events organised by our supporters and the annual Fleet Half Marathon. We have raised over £300,000 over the last five years. 100% of funds raised are used to support our selected projects and activities. All running costs are covered by the family.
