The Mustard Seed Project (kenya)
Who we are
We are a small UK charity supporting the people of an urban slum area of Mombasa. We aim to provide quality education for all and to help the people out of poverty by giving them the confidence, education and skills to solve their own problems.
We have a primary school for 300 children aged 3 to 14 years in classes of 25 with excellent qualified teachers with a feeding programme and a clinic. We aim to provide all children with a curriculum appropriate to their abilty including our able children and those with special needs. Our children are achieving excellent academic results. Our 14 year olds are achieving a mean score of B- in their KCPE (Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education) when the Kenyan government consider a C to be a good grade. These grades give the children opportunities to succeed.
After 12 years we have just completed our own school building but there is no land attached but we intend to purchase a plot nearby when we have the funds.
Our next step is to provide a class set of laptops. We have 6 laptops in school which are being used by the office and teachers but we must now buy a class set of laptops. IT is now part of the Kenyan curriculum but is anyway important for the society in which they are growing up.
