Rainbows4children is an independent foundation set up in memory of Nicolas Robinson (son of the founder) and provides education for disadvantaged children in Ethiopia; primarily the children of adults suffering from disabilities such as loss of limbs and blindness. 100% of donations go directly to the educational projects. This is made possible because all the administration work is carried out entirely by unpaid volunteers.

The town of Mekele in Tigray is in a very poor region of Ethiopia. The people there are hard-working and determined to make progress, but they do need outside help. Rainbows4children has chosen to support the children of parents with disabilities, usually caused by the loss of limbs due to landmines or through other war injuries. This group of people has set up a self-help organisation called the Tigray Disabled Veterans Association (TDVA).

In cooperation with the TDVA, Rainbows4children started construction of the Nicolas Kindergarten in 2004, and in September 2005 it opened to 160 children, aged 4-6 years. It was extended in 2006 and now it has capacity for 240 children. Since then we have landscaped the gardens and built a play area and eating room so they have more space for learning.

In 2006, construction started on the Primary School. Over the next 4 years, the school and facilities were expanded to give a classroom block with classrooms to accomodate 640 students from grades 1-8 (ages 6-14). In addition a large library, music/meeting room, sports ground and eating room were all constructed. A computer room and laboratory are also provided.

Construction on the secondary school started in 2011, and in September 2012 the Secondary School opened with 75 grade, 9 students, 36 of whom had graduated from our own Primary School, grade 8. Now we have a total of 360 students in the secondary school, 90 each in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. The children in the senior grades can benefit from best in class facilities including excellent science laboratories teaching practical science. Children can complete their education entirely at the Nicolas School.

Equipment for the school is funded by donors and is supplied mainly by local businesses in Mekele and in Addis Ababa, including workshops where many people with disabilties are working. In 2010 we equipped the school classrooms and library with 22,000 books. We have active computer classes  from grade 1 of the school to give the very best opportunities to the children.

A total of 1400 children are now studying at the school and 450 of them are sponsored in their education by overseas supporters.
