Fragile X Syndrome is the most common, known, inherited cause of learning disabilities and the Society is the only charity (established in 1990) to seek to care for those affected and those who care for them. It is reckoned that 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 6000 females are affected to some marked degree. As many as 1 in 250 women and 1 in 800 men are carriers, though most have no idea that they are. Through its support and information services, newsletter and conferences the Fragile X Society works to improve the quality of life of all affected by fragile X. The Society also seeks to raise awareness of the condition, supports research into it and publicises relevant results.
